Before You Buy
What exactly is Gift Memory Engine?
Gift Memory Engine is a personal gift-tracking app that runs in your browser (Chrome or Edge). It helps you remember what gifts you've given and received across all your relationships, bank gift ideas for the future, and stay ahead of upcoming occasions. All your data lives in a file on your own computer — there's no account to create and no subscription fee.
What do I need to run it?
- Browser: Google Chrome 86+ or Microsoft Edge 86+ (any operating system). These browsers support the auto-save feature. Safari and Firefox work with manual export — you'll need to download your data file each time and re-open it on next visit.
- Operating system: Windows, macOS, or Linux — any OS that can run Chrome or Edge.
- Excel or spreadsheet app: Not required to use the app. Optional if you want to open the raw data file directly.
- Language: English (all versions currently).
- Internet connection: Only needed for initial registration and optional version checks. The app itself runs entirely offline.
Do I need a subscription?
No. Gift Memory Engine is a one-time purchase. You pay once and own it. Future versions may be sold separately, but your existing licence is not affected by new version pricing.
What's included in the download?
- Life-OS.html — the app (open this in Chrome or Edge)
- allmy-data.xlsx — a sample data file with example entries to explore
- README.txt — getting-started guide
Is my data private?
Yes. Your gift data, people list, and ideas are stored entirely in a spreadsheet file on your own computer. We have no server copy, cannot see your data, and cannot recover it. The app sends nothing to us automatically. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I activate after purchase?
After buying on Etsy, visit digital.guv1.com/register with your Etsy order number and email address. You'll receive a licence key by email. Enter it in the app under Settings → Licence. Registration is free and takes about a minute.
Can I lose my purchase if something goes wrong?
Once you download the app file, it's yours locally. You can look up your licence key any time at digital.guv1.com/register using your registered email address. Keep a backup of your data file using the built-in backup feature.
Getting Started
How do I open the app?
Open Life-OS.html in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. On first run, click "Open data file" and choose allmy-data.xlsx to explore the sample data, or click "New data file" to start fresh. The app will ask you to grant access to a folder — this is how it auto-saves your data.
Why does the app ask me where to save a file when I first open it?
The app stores your data in a spreadsheet file on your computer. When you open the app for the first time (or create a new data file), it prompts you to choose where to save it. This is a one-time setup — after that, the app opens the same file automatically and saves changes as you work.
What are the step-by-step helpers?
When you visit a screen for the first time, the app highlights the key elements and walks you through what each part does. You can skip or dismiss these. If you want to see them again, go to Settings → Tutorials → Replay.
How do I find my licence key if I've lost it?
Visit digital.guv1.com/register and click "Look up my licence." Enter your registered email address and your key will be emailed to you.
Can I use the app on a different computer?
Yes. Copy both the Life-OS.html file and your data file (allmy-data.xlsx or whatever you named it) to the new computer. Open the app and click "Open data file" to load your data. Your licence key works on devices you personally control.
Safari and Firefox — what features are limited?
Safari and Firefox do not currently support the File System Access API, which is what allows the app to auto-save your data file directly. In these browsers, you'll need to manually export (download) your data after each session and re-open it next time. Chrome and Edge are recommended for the best experience.
Data & Backups
How do I back up my data?
Go to Settings → Backups. Choose a backup folder, set the frequency (daily is recommended), and the app will automatically copy your data file there on save. You can also click "Back up now" at any time.
I lost my data file. Can you recover it?
Unfortunately no — your data lives entirely on your device and we have no server copy. This is by design for privacy. Check your backup folder first. Going forward, enable automatic backups in Settings.
Can I open my data in Excel?
Yes. Your data file is a standard Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx). You can open it in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, or any compatible app. The app handles all reading and writing, so Excel is never required, but the file is always accessible to you directly.
Licence & Registration
Do I need to register?
Registration is free and recommended. It links your licence to your email address, so you can recover your key if needed, and means we can notify you of updates. The app works without registration, but some features (licence verification, update checks) require it.
How many devices can I use the app on?
Your licence is for personal use on devices you personally control. There's no hard device limit for personal use, but the licence does not cover shared use across multiple people.
Can I share the app with a friend or family member?
Each person needs their own licence. Sharing the app file or your licence key is not permitted under the terms of use. Gift purchases are available — see your purchase confirmation for options, or contact us.
